CHANGES TO MY STUDY PROGRAMME
Well, this has been a recurrent topic of discussion for me these last couple of years, especially with the global pandemic the differences inside my major came to light.
Knowing we are talking about Universidad de Chile, we must admit that not all
that glitter is gold, and as such, it has its fair share of flaws.
Regarding the teacher side of things, I must say that there are some excellent
professionals in the design major, and also on campus. Nevertheless, there are
some base problems that prevent teachers from doing what they would like to.
Although the new study program came on to solve some of the old one’s flaws, it
seems to be running short on multiple ends, with gaping holes on some
occasions, like the lack of a structures class on the industrial side, and it’s
also missing a lot of semiotics on the graphic front. Because of that, I think
that it is paramount to have a robust set of elective classes to pick from so
to fill up those missing spots.
On the other hand, is really important for the university to start
understanding that design as a major is in dire need of more financing if we
are to position ourselves as one of the best. For that we need to invest in
tools, machinery, and infrastructure for the betterment of its students, and
also for academics who are dedicated to investigation.
It is imperative to propose a study plan that goes along with the variety of
needs that its diverse body of students demand, and also for it to be flexible
enough regarding schedules and variety of courses.
I would like that university and faculty authorities would put more attention
to my major instead of only focusing on architecture because it seems that
frequently all of the budget goes toward them.
